It’s Not All Smoke and Mirrors: The Role of Social Norms, Alcohol Use, and Pandemic Parties in E-Cig

E-cigarette use among college students is on the rise. In times of COVID-19, such use is particularly dangerous as the virus can be fatal to people with compromised airways. A small but growing body of research suggests that social norms can predict e-cigarette use.

However, their own perception of e-cigarette consumption behavior (descriptive norms) and the consent of colleagues (interim norms) have yet to be investigated in college students. Methods

METHODS: Using a sample of 191 students (138 women) who were interviewed from introductory courses at a university in the northeastern United States, we examined the relationships between student demographics, alcohol consumption, binge drinking, COVID-19 non-compliant party visits on and off the premises of campus and social norms of e-cigarette use over the past 30 days with sequential regression.

Two models

Two models were used to determine whether descriptive and subliminal norms for e-cigarette use predict e-cigarette use after demographics in the social norms model and, in addition, demographic and COVID-19 non-compliant party visits, alcohol use and binge drinking were controlled in the party behavior model. mr-joy for best e liquids are found online.

Results

Results: The results showed that descriptive and injective norms for e-cigarette use significantly predicted e-cigarette use in both models, with all covariates being controlled. Conclusions / Importance: The results highlight the importance of social norms in predicting e-cigarette use during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifying areas for prevention and intervention for public health officials and university administrators.
